Robotic Process Automation: how software robots would look like in 3-5 years?
Not long time ago we have questioned ourselves what RPA (Robotic Process Automation) is and how business can benefit from RPA. That time we didn’t expect that RPA would evolve and penetrate different industries so fast and many of us would become so matured in utilizing RPA capabilities along with AI to deliver benefits that were earlier not seen. Being now somewhere in the middle of RPA journey we start to question ourselves again what is next for robotic process automation and how software robots would look like in 3-5 years? Will this technology further accelerate or will die?
This will not be a surprise if we say that many RPA projects failed and the expectations of RPA with regard to cost reduction were not met and as a result some companies dropped out. There is a definite list of explanations and reasons why some companies didn’t manage to succeed with RPA - but this we can discuss in our next blog as this is a large and separate topic for consideration.
Many of you who succeeded in RPA would agree that RPA is a powerful technology that is designed to drive operational efficiency once it is set well. This will not be a breakthrough if we also say that AI, Machine Learning and BI will be a fitting complement to RPA in very short perspective that would enable business to drive even greater operational efficiency: e.g. AI can structure unstructured data that could serve as an input for software robot to process the transactions or AI can facilitate decision making for software robot to be capable to handle the process from end-to-end perspective without human intervention or when it would come to processing more complex tasks with judgment having different criteria to consider another type of AI (natural language processing) can facilitate handling such cases. The question is only how soon this will materialize and which robot’s capabilities we need to develop to make the robots more intelligent and acting in human-like mode. Herebelow, is a quite conservative but still realistic vision and timeline on software robots evolution. However, we all understand that transforming piece of software to machine with cognitive skills and capabilities could happen even earlier as AI, Machine Learning, BI technologies nowadays are evolving very fast.
Conservative vision and timeline on software robot evolution:
- 1 Year from now: Robot’s ability to recognize images with high accuracy (handwriting, face, photo) and process tasks required little judgement
- 2 Years from now: Robot’s ability to recognize speech and process simple operations based on instructions received by voice, ability to process tasks required judgement considering different criteria
- 3 Years from now: Robot’s ability to forecast based on detected data patterns, deal with unforeseen exceptions and take actions based on scenarios never seen before and respectively make decisions
With all that said, advanced potential of AI well integrated in software robots make the Future of RPA very promising and will definitely introduce a greater magnitude of operational efficiency. For companies seeking to achieve rapid payback of RPA is very crucial now to recognize the benefits of combing RPA with different type of AI, Machine Leaning, BI, Cognitive Computing and start leveraging the cognitive technologies on early stage of RPA deployment to succeed and outperform.
